UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH CALIFORNIA MUSIC INDUSTRY SUMMIT FOUNDER TRACY L. REED
The California Music Industry Summit is the brainchild of Tracy L. Reed, owner of TraMai Entertainment. Based in Oakland, CA, the California Music Industry Summit is a two-day music conference that promises to enlighten those seeking a career in the entertainment business as either a performer or a business professional. Read on to find out more about the California Music Industry Summit and its founder, Tracy L. Reed.
What is the inspiration behind the California Music Industry Summit?
As a teenager, I began singing with a girl group called Destiny 4 and we would perform at a lot of local talent shows. We were 1st place winners often, but broke up after two years. I then started singing as a solo artist, and found out early on that I needed to learn more about the business side of entertainment. I went to Saint Mary’s College of California and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law Studies and took it further with a Masters in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University.
So I draw inspiration from all of my past experiences. I also draw inspiration from my parents and from powerful women who have put their stamp on the entertainment business such as Oprah Winfrey and Sylvia Rhone. I just want to provide a platform that educates artist, while at the same time provides performance opportunities and fun.
What is the California Music Industry Summit and what can artists expect while attending the Summit?
The California Music Industry Summit is a two-day educational summit that takes place June 10th – 11th at the Oakland, CA Marriott Hotel. The summit provides opportunities for attendees to meet and learn from music producers, publicists, marketing and branding managers, agents, promoters and much more. Many of the panelists at this year’s conference are involved with the Grammy organization as either part of their executive team or as actual Grammy award winners. We also have opportunities for independent artists to perform at one of our five performance venues for our nightly talent showcases. Exhibitors will be on hand to showcase the next and best products that aid and assist artists in their careers. And of course, there will be plenty of networking amongst industry peers and professionals.
I understand that Teena Marie was to be one of the keynote speakers at the event. Can you enlighten us on that and how it has affected the conference?
My mother was a fan of Teena Marie and it was really special for me to be able to have a chance to bond with her and to develop a lasting friendship. I sent over an email asking Ms. Marie if she would participate as a Keynote Speaker for the summit and she sent a response back within a matter of minutes, saying that she would love to participate. It just showed me how much Ms. Marie gave back to the community and how much she loved her fans. As far as it affecting the conference, we have decided to forge on and are in the process of securing another speaker. We will be paying tribute to Ms. Marie at one of the larger showcases.
Are there any surprises for those who attend the conference?
It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you, now would it (laughs). But I will let one cat out of the bag. LaToya London, American Idol finalist, will be a panelist at the summit. She will also headline our Pop/ R&B showcase.
How are you handling the pressures of producing the conference?
I like to spend time meditating. It really helps me to relax and to put things into perspective. Meditating allows me to remain calm, so that I maintain a level attitude at all times. I also enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends.
