House Of The Rising Sun lyrics
[Originally by Animals]
There is a house down in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun,
It's been the ruin of many a poor girl,
And me, oh god I'm one.
My mother was a tailor.
She sewed those new blue jeans.
My lover was a gambling one.
Down in New Orleans.
Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk
He fills his glasses up to the brim,
And push those cards around.
The only pleasure he gets out of life
Is rambling from town to town.
Now tell my baby sister,
Not to do what I have done.
But shun that house in New Orleans,
They call the Rising Sun.
Got one foot on the platform
The other foot on that train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain
I'm going back to New Orleans
The aged-old soul have run
I'm going back to end my life,
Down in the Rising Sun.
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun,
It's been the ruin of many a poor girl,
And me, oh god I'm one.

Its originally written by bob dylan.
Check out Wiki and Mudcat; first existing recording was in 1933, before Dylan was born, but it was an old song then.
no.....it wasn't. this song has been around for many generations before dylan

I'm not so sure all the song's words presented here are correct. ("...many a poor girl"?; "aged-old" ?)
The song is actually a traditional folk song and was originally about a woman who was led astray.
it's a super old song; bob dylan DID NOT write it, nor did the Animals. The original lyrics are from a female point of view. check any old folk song book.
also, the version on the folk song books I've seen is 'my race is almost run' rather than 'age-old' soul'.
Thing is about folk music, it's free to interpretation and changes. It's so old that nobody gets paid royalties if someone records a version. In fact nobody knows who originally wrote it, just that it was from a female perspective and was most likely about prostitution and a brothel called the Rising Sun. The Animals recorded the most famous version (switched to a male perspective and to a gambler instead of a prostitute), but so many people have sang it there is no way to say who originally did the song.
for those who are confused on the lyrics these are correct it was originally written by a prostitute at the house of the rising sun...
Ok. As said before, it's labeled as "Traditional" So true, the animals didn't write it, Dylan didn't write it, in fact, he heard the Animals version and yelled "Electric!" thus began his carreer. It could very possibly be a whorehouse, it is also very possible that it is a jailhouse as well. Nobody knows. As said before, traditional/folk songs are made with enough mystery that nobody knows who wrote them, what they are about, etc.
Read this!! The House of the rising sun was first recorded in th 1920s by "Texas Alexander." The "Animals" recorded it as an homage to a brothel in New Orleans that took its name from its proprietor, Madame Marianne LeSoleil Lvant (hence the rising sun moniker) Open from 1862 o 1974, it was located at 826-830 St. Louis street. "Leadbelly wrote the lyrics in 1945. Read this and weep morons.
That is only one explanation. There are several different theories on how the song came about. Yes almost every song writer who has come acrossed it has changed the lyrics a little to make it their own. There is however no proff of where the original lyrics came from. The beauty of the song is not from where it originated or who wrote it, but to tell a story to both teach a lesson and entertain the listener. So chill out and enjoy an amazing song.
