Rammstein and the Cold War

5

It should be a fairly well-known fact by now, that the members of Rammstein grew up in the former GDR. When I was in high school, the world map was out every day and Germany was divided at that time. The map had Germany, and it also had 'E. Germany'. And I often found myself wondering, what was going on on the other side of the Iron Curtain.
I never thought that the two Germanies would ever be together again. I remember hearing about it on the news; for once the world was happy for the Germans. It was very surprising to see... but later on I did some research into East German politics and I found it had been 'on the table' as an idea for quite some time. In the former GDR, you basically had 3 types: You had the people who supported communism, you had the ones who wanted something more 'like the west' and then you had the group that advocated for 'Der Dritten Weg' (The Third Way). My understanding of this last group was, they believed there was a way to please everybody without rocking the boat too far to the left or the right. It was very complicated in those eastern satellites, there was a lot of political unrest and it was very strict and controlled. In terms of how all this ties in with Rammstein... it ties in with them a lot, I would say. They grew up under this system; and no matter how much the world may change they are still going to retain some of their early thinking patterns. If a new government came into your town and wanted to change everything (street signs, currency, voting laws, etc.), they could do all that - but how much would they change you? A lot less than you think... and it's the same with everyone. So when I listen to them, this idea is always in the back of my mind.
