What Really Makes A Drummer Great?
When it comes to the exciting world of drumplaying, I look for a few specific things. I look for the drummer to display individual style, versatility in his playing and also a clearness of sound. To me Chris Schneider, Rammstein's drummer, has all three elements going for him; he can be hotter than an inferno one minute, then drop out completely the next. CS unquestionably excels in his ability to display consistent stamina and technique - but to me this is only part of what stands out in separating great drummers from good ones. Equally impressive (and just as important as the first component) is his ability to be part of the group, while still maintaining an 'independent streak' most drummers exhibit (to some degree). His style is prominent, but not overpowering; he manages to move through many different complex rythyms and passages with remarkable dexterity and attentiveness to detail. On top of all this, he is also a drummer who consciously connects with the fans during live performances... simply amazing to watch.
Summing it all up, he is AWESOME.
I wish him a most wonderful birthday (the beginning of next week) - because every day is a spring day with him blasting away inside my headphones!
